Vol. 129 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Forces Pay and Allowances.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the need for an early increase in the pay of members of the Defence Forces, and also for an increase in the allowances to the wives and families of the married members of the forces; and, if so, whether he will make an announcement on the matter at an early date.

Increases in pay and allowances for all members of the Defence Forces were approved in September last, and were made retrospective to the 15th January, 1951. Further increases in pay and allowances for members of the Defence Forces are therefore not contemplated at present.

Mr. Byrne

Is the Minister aware that since September last there has been a considerable increase in the cost of living? Will he not give these men an opportunity of living in the same comfort as they had in September last, by giving them an increase?
