Vol. 129 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army—Refusal of Disability Pension.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that ex-Corporal Patrick Torpey (Army No. 77702) was discharged from the Army suffering from arthritis in 1950 and was refused a disability pension; and, if so, if he will indicate the reason.

I am aware that ex-Corporal Patrick Torpey (No. 77702) was discharged from the forces on the 8th November, 1950, suffering from arthritis.

His application for a disability pension was refused on the grounds that there was no evidence to show that the disability from which he suffered was attributable to service during the emergency period. There is no provision in the Army Pensions Acts for the grant of a disability pension in respect of disease contracted prior to or subsequent to the emergency period. I am, however, having this question further considered.

Is the Minister aware that this is the same person about whom I asked Question No. 14 to-day and to whom the generous South Cork Board of Assistance is giving 14/- a week?

He got 14/- a week but if he were under the North Cork Board of Assistance he would get nothing.

He would not get a midge from you.
