Vol. 129 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Scrap Iron.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will take steps to divert all scrap iron for sale by Córas Iompair Éireann and the Electricity Supply Board to Irish Steel, Limited, Haulbowline, at a controlled price.

Scrap iron represents only a small fraction of the scrap metal used by Irish Steel Holdings, Limited, whilst it is the main raw material for foundries. I consider that the existing arrangements for the distribution of the available supplies of scrap iron are the most satisfactory to meet the requirements of the different classes of users. I do not propose, therefore, to adopt the suggestion made by the Deputy.
