Vol. 129 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Housing Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the reasons why the Clondulance, Shanballymore, Ballyhooly, Rathcormack, Araglin and Fermoy housing schemes have not been started.

Contract documents for the housing scheme at Ballyhooly were submitted to my Department on the 17th instant and were approved on the 23rd. Contract documents for the Fermoy scheme were submitted on the 10th instant and were approved on the 21st. I understand that tenders will be invited immediately for these two schemes. The schemes at Rathcormack and Clondulane were held up owing to the withdrawal by the contractors of the lowest tenders after acceptance. It is understood that alternative arrangements are being made for contracts for these two schemes.

In regard to the Araglin scheme it is understood that it has been found necessary to gauge the source of the proposed water supply over a period of months so as to ascertain whether the supply would be adequate for the housing scheme. A report from the local authority that the supply is adequate and suitable is awaited together with particulars of the proposed sewage disposal arrangements. In the case of Shanballymore no documents have been received in the Department, but it is understood that the housing authority is awaiting a report from its technical officers in regard to the sewerage arrangements required in connection with the proposed housing scheme.

With regard to Clondulane, did the Minister say something about a change of contractor?

The schemes at Rathcormack and Clondulane were held up owing to the withdrawal by the contractors of the lowest tenders after acceptance.

As I understand the present position, the tender in respect of Clondulane was accepted by the Department four months ago. What is preventing the building from proceeding?

The Deputy had better inquire from the local authority.

The Department is holding it up.

Not according to my information.
