Vol. 129 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sowing of Winter Wheat.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state how the setting of winter wheat up to 15th January, 1952, compared in amount with that set for the same period in 1950 and 1951.

Mr. Walsh

The areas sown under wheat on the dates mentioned are not known accurately but sales of winter seed wheat up to 15th January, 1952, indicate that the area sown to winter wheat is slightly less than at the corresponding date in 1951 and markedly less than at the corresponding date in 1950. As the great bulk of wheat sown in recent years is of spring varieties, the sowings of winter varieties cannot be regarded as a reliable indication of what total wheat sowings are likely to be.

Will the Minister state if the scare of the midge militated against the setting of winter wheat?

Mr. Walsh

It scared only Cork people.
