Vol. 129 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Central Bank Expenditure.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the fact that the expenditure of the Central Bank under the heading "Other Expenses" (of which no particulars are given), which stood at £60,805 for the year ended 31st March, 1949, had risen for the year ended 31st March, 1951, to £120,621, he will give particulars of the headings and amounts which account for this increase in expenditure

As stated in reply to previous similar questions by the Deputy, the information required to be furnished by the Central Bank in the accounts of the general fund is prescribed by statutory Order and does not extend to the publication of the details requested. It is stated, however, in the reports of the Central Bank covering the two-year period mentioned, that higher expenditure was incurred for the provision of legal tender notes.

Does the Minister not think that the expenditure under the heading in question by the Central Bank denotes a dangerous inflationary tendency on the part of the Central Bank?

I thought the Deputy was in favour of inflation.

I thought that the Central Bank was not.

When the Minister goes across it will be very bad.
