Vol. 129 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Youghal Fishermen's Rentals.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is prepared to set up a court of inquiry to investigate the inequities imposed on the net fishermen of Youghal by the increase of the rental from £10 in 1950 to £12 in 1951 and £17 in 1952.

If the Deputy's question refers to rents charged by the Lismore Estates Company in respect of permits issued to net fishermen who fish for salmon in the waters controlled by that company, the answer is that I have no power, either under the Fisheries Acts or otherwise, to intervene in the manner indicated.

As one closely associated with the fishermen in Youghal and the surrounding districts may I inform the Parliamentary Secretary that this matter is causing a great deal of uneasiness and I would respectfully ask him to receive a deputation of Deputies from East Cork and Waterford within the next week or two in order to go into the matter fully? I shall be very grateful to the Parliamentary Secretary, if he will do that.

I have pleasure in informing the Parliamentary Secretary that the fishermen have actually paid the £6.

This is Question Time.

It is no harm to give the Parliamentary Secretary that much information.

I understand both Deputies Corry and O'Gorman have satisfactorily settled the question, for a period of six months at any rate. I am quite prepared to receive a deputation at any time, but if Deputy O'Gorman will consider the reply I have given to Question No. 127 I think he may find there the means of solving this problem before the six months expire.
