Vol. 129 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Collection of Tolls and Customs.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, in view of the fact that the collection of tolls and customs in various towns by landlords, many of whom are absentees, is a feudal survival, he will introduce proposals for legislation to provide for the compulsory acquisition of all such tolls and customs by the local authorities.

Local authorities can purchase by agreement market and fair rights including the right to collect tolls and other charges, and these powers are exercised from time to time without undue difficulties. I am not aware of any recent instance of a local authority's proposal to purchase such rights being frustrated by the absence of compulsory powers. If the Deputy knows of any such case and will give me particulars, I shall be glad to consider the matter further.
