Vol. 129 No. 8

- Mayfield (County Cork) National School.

andMr. Desmond asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware of the fact that the present national school at Mayfield, County Cork, is totally inadequate, owing to overcrowding; and whether a site has been secured for the purpose of the erection of a new school; and, if so, how far advanced present proposals are for the commencement of the work.

I am aware that the accommodation in Angel Guardians National School, in the Mayfield district of Cork City, is insufficient for the present attendance. I am proposing to have this position remedied by arranging that future enrolments will be restricted to children living in the school district. This should, in a comparatively short time, afford considerable relief.

Apart from the question of the present overcrowding, I am advised that the existing building is in a structurally sound condition generally and, while its replacement is desirable, the matter of the erection of a new school cannot be regarded as one of urgency.

Is the Minister aware that bus-loads of children go to the other school at Douglas Street because there is no accommodation for them at Mayfield? Children from the 24 recently built houses at Mayfield are not being accommodated in the school in question so the case is one of urgency.

I am aware that many children from outside districts who should be going to other schools are going to Mayfield.

That is actually true.

Not from the same parish.

I was in Cork recently and made a very definite inquiry into the matter. I know all the facts.

Is the Minister aware that a site was purchased some years past with a view to erecting a new school?

I am not aware of that.

The site was purchased.
