Vol. 129 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Waterford Tillage.

andMr. Little asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that lands in the vicinity of Kinsalebeg, County Waterford, have been let by the Land Commission for grazing purposes and, further, that there is considerable dissatisfaction with the policy of the Land Commission in letting lands in their control for grazing without due regard for the need for tillage; and, if so, whether the Government will give directions to the Land Commission as to a definite policy of insisting on tillage wherever possible.

The Land Commission have approximately 271 acres of arable lands on hands in this district. Of that area 100 acres are somewhat impoverished and need to be rehabilitated owing to excessive tillage by the former owner and 67 acres could not be let in tillage owing to inadequate fencing. Of the balance of 104 acres, 34 acres have been let in tillage. In the circumstances reasonable provision was made for tillage on the lands on hands in this district.

As I stated on 13th February, 1952, in reply to a question, I have arranged with the Land Commission that they will let in conacre tillage for the present season as much as possible of the lands in their possession which cannot be allotted this spring.
