Vol. 129 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Statistics.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) the number of acres at present held by the Land Commission in the Twenty-Six Counties; (b) the number of acres of this land which is arable; (c) the number of acres of this arable land which is suitable for (i) wheat and (ii) beet; (d) the number of acres of this arable land which has been let for tillage this year, indicating the quantity of which is suitable for (i) wheat and (ii) beet, and (e) the number of acres of land let by the Land Commission for (i) tillage and (ii) grazing in County Waterford.

The Land Commission have on hands about 90,000 acres of land, of which the greater portion is bog and mountain. Some 12,000 acres only are arable. It will be appreciated that these areas vary from day to day according as estates are acquired and lands allotted.

Records are not kept of the areas suitable for growing wheat and beet.

Lettings of the lands on hands are still in course of being made so it is not possible to state the number of acres which will be let in grazing and in tillage this year in County Waterford or elsewhere.

In addition to the areas previously mentioned the Land Commission have on hands some 45,000 acres, being the remnants of estates taken over from the former Congested Districts Board. This area comprises 20,000 acres of bog, mountain and waste and 25,000 acres of agricultural land which has been let for many years to tenants in whom the lands will probably be eventually vested.
