Vol. 130 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Letterkenny Post Office.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state when it is proposed to proceed with the erection of a new post office at Letterkenny, County Donegal.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware of the urgent need for a new post office in Letterkenny; and, if so, if he will state when it is proposed to commence the erection of the new premises.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 36 and 37 together. Proposals for the erection of a new post office and telephone exchange at Letterkenny are in course of preparation, but it is not possible at this stage to state when construction of the building will commence.

Could the Minister say whether his predecessor two years ago would have been in a position to say that this building was about to be commenced?

Irrespective of whether the Minister's predecessor did make any proposal as to the erection of this post office, will you take steps to ensure that the new post office is erected as quickly as possible?

Do not be side-tracking the issue.

I am not concerned with side-tracking. I am concerned with the erection of the new post office.

I have no information in regard to this particular post office and I may say that there have been very great arrears in the planning and building of new post offices in the last few years.

For how many years?

Will the Minister cause inquiries to be made about the Letterkenny Post Office and look up the relevant file? If he does so he will find that the question has been under consideration, and only under consideration, for the past 20 years.

You did not speed it up very much.

You had 16 years to do it.
