Vol. 130 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Sub-Post Office Vacancy.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the number of applicants (male and female) for the vacancy in Wellington Bridge Sub-Post Office, County Wexford, and if he is aware that the person appointed does not reside on the premises.

There were three applicants, one male and two female, for the recent vacancy for sub-postmaster of Wellington Bridge Sub-Post Office. I am aware that the person appointed does not reside on the suboffice premises. It is not essential that sub-postmasters should do so provided adequate safeguards are taken for the custody of official cash and stocks. In this case the person concerned has agreed to reside on the premises should this be regarded as desirable.

Can the Minister say if any of the other applicants had suitable premises in Wellington Bridge and the necessary qualifications for this position?

The Deputy should know that it is not usual to give details of the reasons of the selection but the committee appointed by my predecessor selected the person who has been appointed.

Would the Minister not like to answer the question as to whether there was another applicant with suitable premises in Wellington Bridge?

I have already indicated that there were two other applicants.

I wanted to know if one of the applicants had suitable premises——

There were premises of a suitable character.

Could the Minister give the name of the successful applicant?

I shall be glad to give the Deputy the name if he wishes to have it privately.
