Vol. 130 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Oats Stocks.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that considerable quantities of oats are held by farmers in North Wexford which they are unable to sell at an economic price and if, to facilitate the sale of the oats, he will arrange for Grain Importers, Limited, to buy these stocks for mixing with milo maize grain held in store by them to be utilised for livestock feeding.

Mr. Walsh

I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave to Deputy McQuillan in this matter on 19th March. I do not consider I would be warranted in introducing a special purchase scheme such as the Deputy suggests.

Has the Minister any suggestion to make in regard to those farmers who find themselves with large stocks of oats which they are unable to dispose of at an economic price as to how they can dispose of it?

Mr. Walsh

There is no reason yet to think that it will not be disposed of.

Has Question 44 been called?

Mr. Walsh

We have some complaints from parts of the country that seed is going out at the present time. As regards feeding oats, there is a market for it, and I believe myself that it will be possible to dispose of it before the next harvest.

These replies are being given to Question No. 44.

Mr. Walsh

I am answering Question No. 44.

The supplementaries are on Question No. 43.

No. Questions Nos. 42 and 43 were taken together and answered together.

There are large quantities of oats in the County Wexford which farmers are unable to sell. I agree that there are large quantities of oats in other parts of the country as well. I am asking if the Minister has any suggestion to make so that farmers can dispose of this feeding oats. This is not seed oats.

Have you any suggestion to make?

Yes. Make it into milo maize and sell the oats at an economic price.

Have you consulted Fine Gael on that position?
