Vol. 130 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, as a result of the canvass carried out some months back by an official of the Electricity Supply Board, it is intended to extend the rural electrification scheme to the villages of Inch, Mount Uniacke and the surrounding areas; and, if not, if he can give any assurance as to when the electrification of those areas will be proceeded with.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the villages of Inch and Mount Uniacke, County Cork, are included in the Gortroe rural area, which was considered for selection by the board in February, 1952, for development under the rural electrification scheme, but was not successful. The board state that the area will be reconsidered for development from time to time.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will bring to the notice of the Electricity Supply Board the urgent need for rural electrification in Ballycroy and district in North Mayo.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the neighbourhood of Ballycroy, County Mayo, referred to by the Deputy, is about ten miles from the nearest point of the board's present network at Malrany. The board point out that owing to the cost of extending supply over this distance it is not expected that the rural area around Ballycroy will be scheduled for development in the immediate future.
