Vol. 130 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transfer of Garda Sergeant.

asked the Minister for Justice whether since assuming office he has considered the case of a Garda sergeant who was transferred from Carrigart district without cause; and, if so, with what result.

I have inquired into the case referred to by the Deputy and I am assured by the Commissioner that his reason for ordering the transfer of the sergeant was that he considered it in the public interest.

Is the Minister satisfied that no other influences had effect in this particular case?

Mr. Boland

So far as the Commissioner is concerned I am quite satisfied. I have examined the case. The Commissioner is the person responsible and I am satisfied that the Commissioner acted in what he considered to be the public interest.

While the Minister feels that the Commissioner was justified, is the Minister satisfied from his own investigations that no influence outside the Commissioner's office was used in this particular case?

Mr. Boland

I do not want to go into all these matters. I adhere to what I have already said, that the Commissioner is the person responsible for the administration of the Garda force and I am satisfied from my own investigations that, as far as the Commissioner is concerned, he acted in the best public interest in this case. I do not propose to go into any other matter raised by the Deputy.
