Vol. 130 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Slate Deposits.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there are large areas of slate deposits in West Cork not in production at present; and, if so, if he will indicate what steps he proposes to take to have them developed and worked.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. The development and working of slate quarries in West Cork is a matter for private enterprise. I would suggest to the Deputy that local interests might consider the advisability of engaging expert consultants to advise them on the prospects of successful commercial working of the quarries in question.

Seeing that local enterprise has failed, will the Minister take any steps in the matter?

What steps does the Deputy think I should take.

Would the Minister not consider it rather peculiar that slates and roofing tiles should be imported when we have these deposits in West Cork?

As far as I know, there are 15 people owning slate quarry deposits in West Cork, and if they are not working them there must presumably be some reason for it.

Lack of capital.

I do not think so.
