Vol. 132 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cardboard Box Imports.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (a) the quantity of cardboard boxes which will be permitted to be imported up to March, 1953; (b) the quantity of printed containers to be imported up to March, 1953, and (c) whether the Irish manufacturers of printed containers and cardboard boxes are in a position to supply the full requirements of the Irish Republic of such printed containers and cardboard boxes.

The duty on cardboard boxes and containers which had been suspended since July, 1943, was restored as from the 27th May as announced in the daily newspapers on that date. There is no quantitative restriction on imports; and I could not forecast what quantities of cardboard boxes or printed containers will be imported up to March, 1953, but as the Irish manufacturers have assured me that they are in a position to meet the full requirements of the Irish market it is expected that these imports will not be large.
