Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Exchequer Borrowings.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the amount of money borrowed by the Exchequer in each of the financial years 1948-49, 1950-51 and 1951-52 and the principal items on which such moneys were spent; and (b) the amount of money proposed to be borrowed in the current financial year.

The amounts borrowed by the Exchequer in the years indicated were as follows:—

38,938,900 (excluding £2,130,100 borrowed to redeem National Loans).

The principal items on which these moneys were spent were: housing loans and grants; advances for electricity development; telephones; turf development; drainage, land reclamation, schools and other voted "capital services"; advances to Córas lompair Éireann to cover debenture interest; advances to the Road Fund; and the deficit on the 1951 current Budget.
