Vol. 132 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Portnoo Postal Deliveries.

andMr. J. Brennan asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that the revised postal arrangements now in operation at Portnoo post office have resulted in considerably later deliveries to many districts and that the services of one postman have been dispensed with; and if, in view of the fact that the Portnoo-Narin area is one of the principal tourist resorts in County Donegal, he will restore the original and more satisfactory postal arrangements.

A revision of services in the Donegal head office district was undertaken for the purpose of extending a daily delivery as economically as possible to all areas which had not hitherto enjoyed this facility.

The economic layout of the posts at Portnoo necessitated terminating the services of a postman who was employed in a temporary capacity since March last pending the introduction of the revised working. Out of 124 postmen in the head office district it was possible to effect the revision without terminating the services of any of the permanent appointed staff.

With the exception of seven houses west of the main Portnoo-Rosbeg road later deliveries will not arise from the revision. Deliveries in areas benefiting from tourist traffic will not be affected.

Is the Minister aware that any improvements in deliveries in the Portnoo area have been made at the expense of the Rosbeg and other districts? In view of the fact that the services of a temporary postman have been dispensed with, will the Minister now reconsider the question with a view to bringing this postman back into service and thus helping the services in the Rosbeg area? The public appreciate the decision of the Minister to give letter services to the areas concerned.

I will bring the Deputy's views to the attention of the Minister concerned.
