Vol. 132 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flour Supplies and Prices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of his assurance that bakers who have overdrawn their quota are to be given special allowances of 85 per cent. flour to tide them over the last fortnight of rationing, he will consider granting the same facilities to all bakers who will be short of flour for that period.

I have caused it to be known that any baker who applies will be granted a permit to purchase additional supplies of 85 per cent. flour at the economic price.

I should say, however, that I am considering recent representations made to me for an alternative arrangement, and a decision will be made without delay.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether there is a standard price for all flour supplied to bakeries; and, if not, on what basis the differential price is arrived at.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the allowances which have been granted to bakers on the purchase of flour.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will consider issuing flour to all bakers at a flat rate, as all bakers are required by law to sell bread at a uniform price.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 2, 3 and 4 together.

A standard ex-mill price for bakers' flour throughout the country is fixed under the provisions of the Flour, Wheatenmeal and Bread Orders, 1949 to 1951.

Millers are permitted to give allowances by way of discount, etc., off this standard price to the customers to whom allowances were given before the Government assumed control over the milling industry, but millers are not permitted to vary the rate on the allowances.

Recent representations made to me suggesting a flat price for flour supplied to all bakers are being examined, but I can foresee serious difficulties in giving effect to such a scheme.
