Vol. 132 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Discharge of Phoenix Park Workers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a number of men who were employed in the Phoenix Park by Fuel Importers (Éire), Limited, have recently been laid off, and if, in view of the fact that some of these men had long service with this firm, he will state what steps are being taken to give them alternative employment.

I am aware of the layoff of a number of employees of Fuel Importers, Limited, consequent on the cessation of American coal imports. As already intimated, in reply to a question on the 24th April last, particulars of all the staff who had long service with the company have been sent to State-sponsored bodies and to Government Departments for special consideration in the filling of suitable vacancies. I have also approached the Dublin City Manager and the Dublin Port and Docks Board in the matter. At least 22 of the men are now in alternative employment, and every effort will continue to be made to place those who are still without work.
