Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Horses for Slaughter.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the number of horses exported for slaughter to (a) Great Britain and (b) other countries during the years 1950 and 1951 and the first five months of 1952.

The particulars requested by the Deputy are not available, since exporters are obliged to state in respect of live horses only whether they are (a) permanently exported, (b) temporarily exported, (c) returned after temporary export. Information as to the subsequent disposal of the animals, which may not be available to the exporters, is not asked for.

Bearing generally on the Deputy's query, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing the number of live horses returned as permanently exported which were consigned to Great Britain and to all other countries during the years 1950-51 and for the first five months of 1952.

Following is the statement:
