Vol. 133 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Married Quarters for Soldiers.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the need for increasing married quarters for serving soldiers; and, if so, if he will recommend to the Government the immediate building of suitable cottages or up-to-date blocks of flats for those young men serving in the Defence Forces and anxious to make it their future career.

I am aware of the need for increasing married quarters for serving soldiers and the question has been under consideration for some time. Efforts will continue to be made to solve the problem as soon as possible.

Mr. Byrne

Is the Minister aware that at the present moment a large number of young newly-wed soldiers are without housing accommodation, with the result that the boy is generally living at home with his mother, and the girl living at home with her parents? In view of these circumstances will the Minister speed up the erection of houses or do something in the way of giving these young married couples an allowance that will permit them to pay the rents that are now being charged?

The matter is being fully looked after.
