Vol. 133 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages and Salaries of Gaeltarra Éireann Employees.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the amount of wages paid to weavers of the tweed section of Gaeltarra Éireann for the financial year ended 31st March, 1952.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the amount of salary paid to officials of the tweed section of Gaeltarra Éireann, as distinct from weavers, during the financial year ended 31st March, 1952.

Mr. Lynch

The amount is approximately £3,200.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the average weekly earnings paid to (a) indoor or factory weavers, and (b) outdoor or home weavers during the financial year ended 31st March, 1952.

Mr. Lynch

The particulars are (a) £4 8s. and (b) £2 4s. 6d. These average earnings are not representative of the rate of remuneration as the weavers, particularly the outdoor weavers, do not work full time at weaving as a rule. Efficient workers earn 2/- or more an hour.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary not consider that this organisation is top heavy in so far as officials are concerned, in view of the fact that one-fourth of the total amount paid is paid to the officials?

Will the Parliamentary Secretary look into that?

Mr. Lynch

I will. This supplementary question does not arise out of the last question. To arrive at the amount I gave with regard to the amount paid to workers other than weavers, there has to be taken into account the total amount paid to supervisory staff, of whom there are five. A percentage of the amount is paid to five other workers engaged in the handling of tweeds as they go into the factory.
