Vol. 133 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sports Pools.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state if it is intended to prevent the running of sports pools in this country and, if so, what measures will be used for this purpose.

Mr. Boland

I am advised that these pools are illegal. As it is possible that the promoters are not aware of this, I directed that the Gardaí should inform them of the illegality and of the fact that heavy penalties attach to contraventions. Having given the promoters time to wind-up the pools, I propose to issue, in the near future, a public notice warning all persons that pools are contrary to law, and that persons operating them render themselves liable to be prosecuted and, on conviction, to suffer heavy penalties.
