Vol. 134 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Seed Oats.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether it is intended to import certified seed oats for the coming season; and, if so, if he will indicate the amount to be imported; further, if he will ensure that as a result of these imports surplus stocks of home-grown oats will not be left on the hands of the producers.

Mr. Walsh

It has been customary, in order to meet the needs of growers requiring a change of seed, to import annually a small proportion of our seed oats requirements. This season it is proposed to import approximately 3,000 tons which represent only about 5 per cent. of normal sowings, and should not interfere with the marketing of home produced oats.
