Vol. 134 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dollar Allocations for American Coal.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the value of the dollars allotted for the importation of American coal; whether any, and, if so, what conditions were attached to such allocation, and whether the allocation was made to one or more firms.

It is assumed that the Deputy's question refers to allocations made in recent months and not to importations of American coal during earlier periods. In the quarter ended September, 1952, foreign exchange to the amount of $590,000 was allotted for approximately 40,000 tons of American coal. As a result of a price adjustment the amount was subsequently raised to $593,000.

The allocations were made subject to the normal exchange control conditions relating to the purpose of the importation, the approved method of payment and the furnishing in due course of prescribed evidence as to the completion of the transaction.

The allocations were made to four firms of coal importers from whom applications had been received.
