Vol. 134 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Married Women Teachers—Children's Allowances.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state why married women national teachers are discriminated against in the departmental circular (Ref. No. 18/52) concerning allowances in respect of children of national teachers.

Children's allowances in addition to salary are essentially payments for married men. Under the regulations for national teachers the allowances may also be paid, in certain circumstances, to widows. Married women who may be serving as national teachers could not be considered eligible for children's allowances in their own right.

Does the Minister not consider that they have been victimised by the non-payment of these children's allowances to them?

I think I would prefer to avoid an issue on that.
