Vol. 134 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Land.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) the number of acres of land purchased by persons resident in but not citizens of the Republic of Ireland in each of the years 1947 to 1951, inclusive, and up to the latest date in 1952, and (b) the value of land so purchased during those years.

It is not possible to give the particulars sought in respect of persons resident in Ireland (excluding the Six Counties) but not citizens of Ireland. With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, however, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the available particulars regarding purchases of land by persons not citizens of Ireland and in respect of which the 25 per cent. stamp duty imposed by the Finance (No. 2) Act, 1947, was paid. The information available does not distinguish between purchases by noncitizens resident here and those resident outside.

Following is the statement:—

What is the difficulty of ascertaining the amount of land that is being purchased by parties who are not citizens of the Republic of Ireland? Is there a difficulty in ascertaining the amount of land purchased by such people?

The Statistics Branch find that there is difficulty. I have told the Deputy that it is not possible to give the particulars sought in respect of persons resident in Ireland, excluding the Six Counties, but not citizens of Ireland. I shall have further inquiries made for the Deputy.
