Vol. 136 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Office Radio Communication.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will provide radio communication at the chief post office in each city to enable messages and telegrams to be exchanged with residents of islands off the coasts.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 133 and 136 together.

The establishment of a radio telephone network on the lines suggested by the Deputy is not contemplated. Public telephone and telegraph needs within the country can best be met by landlines supplemented, in regard to certain islands, by radio telephone links connecting with terminal installations on the mainland joined to the ordinary public telephone system.
