Dáil Éireann debate -
Thursday, 5 Feb 1953

Vol. 136 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Éireann Programme.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he has satisfied himself that the review of events during 1952 presented from Radio Éireann on New Year's Eve was an unbiased version and, further, whether the views of the Department of Finance were invited.

I am satisfied that the review of events broadcast from Radio Éireann was an unbiased version. The Department of Finance was not invited to give its view on the script, but the extracts from the Minister for Finance's Budget speech in the Dáil were chosen and recorded by the Minister.

Will the Minister not agree that the statements which were recorded by the Minister for Finance were entirely out of accord with the statement made by the Secretary of the Department of Finance which was endorsed at a late hour last night by the Taoiseach? It is the feeling of the people throughout the country that the radio was utilised that night for a pure piece of political propaganda.

The Deputy is talking sheer nonsense. The Deputy should have regard to the character of the broadcast which was made.
