Vol. 136 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Baltimore Shipyards: 1953 Programme.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will indicate the programme proposed for the Department's shipyards at Baltimore for 1953.

The boatyard at Baltimore is operated by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara and not by my Department. I am informed by the board that when the two boats (one 28 foot and one 35 foot) at present under construction in the yard are completed about the beginning of April, it is proposed to proceed with the building of another 35-foot boat. The board is not in a position to say at this stage what additional work will be placed with the yard for the present year, as this will depend on the number and type of new fishing boats required and the amount of repair work which may arise.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary indicate whether it is likely that there will be continuous employment in this boatyard during the coming year?

Continuous employment during the coming year will depend on the number of orders for new boats or for repairs coming in, and it is a matter which cannot be anyway approximately estimated.
