Vol. 136 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Donegal Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the Fíor Gaeltacht districts of Derrybeg to Brinalack have been pressing for the extension of the Rosses regional water supply scheme for years without success, thereby preventing prospective Gaelic students from coming to this Fíor Gaeltacht district for summer and other courses; and, if so, if he will take immediate steps to have the Donegal County Council implement the promise made by them some years ago and the extension completed forthwith.

Extensions of the Rosses regional water supply scheme to Burtonport, Dungloe and Brinalack to be carried out in the order stated were included by the sanitary authority in the programme of sanitation schemes adopted by them some years ago. Work on the first extension has been completed and final plans for the second have been approved. I have received no recent proposals in respect of the extension to Brinalack. The matter is primarily one for the sanitary authority.

In view of the fact that the Minister states that decisions were taken some years ago to carry outthese schemes, could he give any indication as to when they will be carried out or who is responsible for the delay?

I have told the Deputy the order in which these proposals were to be carried out and I have also informed him that the execution of the works is a matter entirely for the local body.

So the county council is to blame?

Maybe nobody is to blame.

If it is the responsibility of the county council——

It is always the hurler on the fence who is the best hurler.

Sometimes he can hurl fairly well if he gets an opportunity.
