Vol. 136 No. 8

Defence Forces (Temporary Provisions) Bill, 1953 — Second and Subsequent Stages.

I move that the Bill be now read a Second Time. Its purpose is to continue in force for a further period the Defence Forces (Temporary Provisions) Acts, 1923 to 1952, which will expire on the 31st March next.

This is purely continuing. I have no objection. I think we could agree to take all stages now.

That is what I proposed to do provided the House agreed.

On the Second Stage, is this the Bill that is to be made unnecessary by the monumental Bill which is at present under consideration by the Special Committee?

Yes. I am prepared now to have all stages taken provided the Minister will try and expedite the continuance of the discussion on the Bill to replace this, because I think Deputy Cowan has difficulties.

I find it very difficult to keep up the form all the time. I take it that we can ask to-morrow.

Question put and agreed to.
Agreed to take the remaining stages now.
Bill put through Committee without amendment, received for final consideration and passed.
