Vol. 136 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Worker's Wages.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a cheque for the sum of 3d. at present value of money was paid on the 12th February, 1953, by Bord na Móna to a worker in settlement of his week's work (cheque No. 37699, Munster and Leinster Bank, Longford), and if he has any observations to make.

The rates of wages and general conditions of employment of workers employed by Bord na Móna are matters solely for the board, in which I have no function.

I have, however, inquired from the board how the circumstances mentioned in the question might arise.

I am informed that a worker who absented himself from work without permission for a part of a week but who nevertheless continued to reside in one of the board's hostels might find that his earnings would not appreciably exceed the standard charge for board and lodgings which would be deducted from his earnings. In such circumstances, however, his employment would be terminated.

What about the Truck Act?
