Vol. 136 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Steamer Passenger Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he has received any report from An Bord Fáilte as to the possibility of arranging for a steamer passenger serviceon the Shannon from Limerick to Carrick-on-Shannon; and, if so, the nature of such report.

I brought to the notice of An Bord Fáilte for consideration on its merits, from the point of view of tourist traffic development, the suggestion that local enterprise should be encouraged and assisted in initiating a passenger boat service on the Shannon. I did not ask for a report from the board. The responsibility for deciding whether they should take any action rests with the board and I do not think it would be proper for me to attempt to influence their decision in such a matter.

Would the Minister ask them if they have reached any decision on the matter?

No, the board is set up by statute to perform certain functions and I have never attempted to influence their decisions in a matter of this kind.

Surely the Minister could inquire, just for information?
