Vol. 139 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sugar Price Increase.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total amount of the additional burden which the domestic consumer will have to bear in respect of the recent increase of 1/2d. per lb. on the retail price of sugar sanctioned by him.

The addition to the domestic consumer is the amount stated in the question, namely, 1/2d. per lb. which is a gross figure.

What is the estimate of the aggregate amount in a year? What does the Minister estimate will be the yield of the 1/2d. for domestic consumption?

I was not asked for that information. I told the Deputy last week that home consumption for all purposes, including the manufacture of commodities for home consumption, is about 100,000 tons per year. It would be a matter of working it out on that basis.

I think the Minister is in a position to give us the division as between domestic and industrial consumption.

I could for some past year.
