Vol. 139 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Handweaving Industry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the difficulties experienced by the Irish handweaving industry which, inter alia, manufactures headsquares, scarves, stoles, etc., due to the importation of similar articles and if he will take remedial action in the matter.

Inquiries which I have caused to be made have not established that any difficulties are being experienced by the Irish handweaving industry which are in any way attributable to excessive imports of handwoven goods. In fact, the industry caters mainly for the export trade and its degree of reliance on the home market is limited.

I understand that at least one firm, possibly two, are adversely affected at present. If the Minister gets particulars will he have the matter examined?

Certainly, but of course we have sources of information in this regard in so far as the bulk of this market is in the hands of Gaeltarra Éireann.
