Vol. 139 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income-Tax Assessment on Land Purchase.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether income-tax is assessed on the holdings of land purchased by migratory workers who have earned the purchase price of such holdings in Britain and the number so assessed for the years 1951-52 and 1952-53.

The question of whether migratory workers are assessable to income-tax in respect of holdings of land purchased by them depends in each case on the amount of the worker's total income and the personal allowances to which he may be entitled. There are no statistics available as to the number, if any, of migratory workers assessed to income-tax in respect of such holdings.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary say that no such type of person as referred to in the question has been assessed for income-tax?

I have said no such thing. I have said that there are no statistics available as to the number, if any, of migratory workers assessed for income-tax in respect of such holdings.

That is a very nice qualification. There have been atleast some in County Mayo who have been assessed. I would request the Minister for Finance to take up this question so that migratory workers will know where they stand. I consider it a most objectionable practice. It is bad enough that they have to go to England, without salting them in this way.
