Vol. 140 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Imported Herrings.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that on the 25th June, 1953, there was a glut of imported herrings on the Dublin market competing against the catches of the Howth fishermen; and, if so, if he will take immediate steps to prevent the importation of herrings to the Republic.

I am not aware that the position is as stated by the Deputy. My information is that the supplies of herrings on the Dublin wholesale fish market last week were all cleared even though good suppliesof other fish were on offer. Licences for the importation of fish are issued having regard to the circumstances existing at a particular time and I cannot give any undertaking in that regard in advance.
