Vol. 140 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Joint Stock Banks.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the total number of branches of the associated banks operating within the Republic of Ireland; (b) of the total, what number have their headquarters outside the Republic of Ireland; (c) what action the Government is taking to ensure that the financial business of our people shall be controlled from within the Republic of Ireland.

According to the latest available information the number of whole-time offices of associated banks within the Republic of Ireland is 557, of which 205 belong to bankshaving headquarters outside the Republic. The business transacted at all these offices is controlled by the banking laws of the Republic of Ireland and no special action is called for.

Would the Minister indicate what statutes embody the banking law of the Republic?

Surely that is a separate question.

That is a question for a lawyer.
