Vol. 141 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pensions of Retired Local Authority Officials.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is now prepared to grant an increase in pensions to local authority officials who retired prior to 1950 on the same basis as the increase in remuneration granted to serving officials.

The introduction of amending legislation to enable an increase to be awarded in the pensions of retired officers of local authorities is not at present contemplated.

Is the Minister aware that a great number of these retired local officials are existing on small pensions, and, in view of the increases which it is proposed to grant to other categories of retired State servants, will he consider favourably the introduction of amending legislation?

I have nothing to add to what I told the Deputy. I have met those people and, of course, I understand their position, but at present it is not the intention to introduce the necessary legislation to give effect to their wishes.
