Vol. 141 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building of Bungalows in Athlone.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that a scheme of privately built bungalows is about to be erected at Griffith Street, Athlone, with the full approval of the urban council town planner and if he will state whether it is correct that the same site was condemned by his Department as being unsuitable owing to density when it was submitted for the purpose of building working class houses by the council; and, if so, if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that permission has been given by Athlone Urban District Council, under the Town and Regional Planning Acts, for the erection of bungalows at Griffith Street, Athlone. Sanction was refused to the erection of houses by the council on the site as, for a number of reasons including the proposeddensity of development, it was not considered suitable for this purpose.

As no appeal has been made to me against the decision of the manager under the Town and Regional Planning Acts and as no application has been made to me for grants under the Housing Acts in respect of the bungalows proposed to be built by private enterprise on the site I have at present no functions in regard to the use of the site for private housing purposes.
