Vol. 141 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sharks' Carcases.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a firm in Belfast finds it economical to send a fleet of lorries fromBelfast to collect the carcases of sharks landed at Purteen Harbour, Achill; and, if so, if he will consider setting up a factory for processing these carcases for producing fish meal, etc., and thereby give much needed employment to this Gaeltacht area.

I am not in a position to express any opinion on the economics of the arrangements made by the firm in question for the collection of the carcases of sharks landed at Achill. A factory which has been built in County Galway by private interests for the processing of animal and fish material into feeding stuffs and fertilisers, will, I understand, be in production within the next two months. Other proposals relating to this industry have also been submitted to my Department but I cannot, at this stage, state whether they may proceed.
