Vol. 141 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Parasite in Lakes.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of the presence in many western lakes of an insect known as louse argulus which is extremely harmful to brown and sea trout; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take to clear such lakes of this parasite.

The carp louse (argulus) is known to be present in most freshwater lakes and rivers, but in this country it is not a menace to fish stocks except in a few small western lakes. The control of the pest has been under consideration in my Department, but so far no means of dealing with it have been evolved here or, I may add as far as is known, in other countries.
