Vol. 141 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Galway Applications to An Foras Tionscal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if in regard to the operation of An Foras Tionscal he will give particulars of the names of the two concerns in County Galway whose applications were granted and the amount of the grants made to each of these two concerns.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if in regard to the operations of An Foras Tionscal he will give particulars of the six proposals made to start industries in County Galway which were rejected stating the proposed nature and location of the six industries rejected.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 8 and 9 together.

The Undeveloped Areas Act, 1952, provides for the submission by An Foras Tionscal of an annual report to be laid on the Table of both Houses of the Oireachtas. That report has been presented to both Houses. I do not think it is desirable that An Foras Tionscal should be asked to supply information other than that contained in the report.

Would the Minister give the location of the sites?

The Deputy is referring to factories in respect to which either approval of the project was refused or, where approval having been given, the formalities have not yet been completed.

Arising out of the reply to Question No. 8, the Deputy has inquiredabout two proposals granted in County Galway. The Minister will recall that on the occasion of a by-election in North Mayo, it was announced by himself in the middle of the election that a biscuit factory was to be erected in Ballina. To date, it has never materialised?

How does that arise?

I suspect this question is designed to ascertain whether there are to be two more biscuit factories in South Galway?

What the Deputy has just said is not true. What I stated in Ballina was that a project for a factory in that area had been approved by Foras Tionscal and a grant of £70,000 allocated for it. That is perfectly true.

The answer was given in the middle of the by-election. I suppose there will be about 14 factories in South Galway.

Promises cost nothing.
