Vol. 142 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imported Butter.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the quantity and cost of imported butter in store at present, the quantity of such butter used since 1st August last, whether it is proposed to import further quantities of such butter before 1st April, 1954; and, if so, the amount.

Mr. Walsh

The stocks of imported butter held by the Butter Marketing Committee on 15th October, 1953, amounted to 18,550 cwt. This butter, together with other butter imported during the current year, was purchased at the average price of 380/3 per cwt. c.i.f. Dublin. During the period from 1st August to 15th October, 1953, the committee sold 347 cwt. As a precaution against the very serious position which would arise if there were to be a deficiency in home production, I considered it prudent to enter into an arrangement earlier this year to buy a further 500 tons for importation before 1st April, 1954.

Are you going to bring in 500 tons?

Mr. Walsh

If necessary.
