Vol. 143 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dead Meat Trade.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) the number of plants engaged in the dead meat trade and the counties in which these are situated, and (b) the maximum number of persons employed in such plants at any period during the preceding three years.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving particulars of the number of premises authorised to engage in carcase meat trade, meat canning and bacon curing classified by counties and county boroughs. It is not possible to state the maximum number of persons employed on the dead meat trade in concerns which engaged in it at any period over the last three years. The employment figures available relate to all the activities of such concerns, which in some important cases include the manufacture of commodities other than those of animal origin.

Following is the statement:—

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in relation to the deadmeat export trade (a) the total quantity and value of such exports in each year from 1945 to date, distinguishing as between canned, chilled and frozen meat; (b) the countries to which such exports were sent, and (c) the quantity and value exported to each country distinguishing between canned, chilled and frozen meat.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the desired information in the detail available. Exports of poultry and rabbits are not included in the table, and, further, no information is available as to the quantity and value of exports of meat by parcel post over the period.

Following is the statement:—

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) the total number of cattle, sheep and pigs killed and dressed by the dead meat trade for export in each of the years 1945 to date; (b) the estimated value of such animals in each year on the basis of prevailing market prices; and (c) the percentage of the total live-stock export trade represented by the total of such animals.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving for the years 1945-52 (a) the estimated number of cattle andcalves, of sheep and lambs and of pigs killed for export, (b) the estimated value of such live stock on the basis of the prices prevailing at fairs and markets in each year, (c) the percentage which the value figures given at (b) form of the estimated value, at prevailing fair and market prices, of the total of such animals killed for export and exported alive. The values in question do not include the value added by the manufacturing processes or the cost of transport, etc. included in the f.o.b. value of exports. Particulars for 1953 are not yet available.

Following is the statement:—

Statement showing for each of the years 1945 to 1952(a)the estimated numbers of cattle and calves, sheep and lambs and pigs killed for export;(b)the estimated value of such animals at prevailing fair or market prices and(c)the percentage which the value figures at(b)form of the estimated value, at prevailing fair or market prices, of the total of such animals killed for export and exported alive.
