The preliminary estimate of total personal income in the year 1952 was £418,000,000. The estimate for personal expenditure on consumer goods and services in that year was £373,000,000. Total direct taxation on persons (which includes income-tax, surtax, stamp duties (exclusive of fee stamps), that portion of motor vehicle duties paid by persons, wireless licence fees and contributions to social insurance) has been estimated at £26,000,000, and the balance of £19,000,000 represents personal savings.
